What is GPON?
GPON, which stands for (Gigabit Passive Optical Network). It's a type of optical fiber network access architecture working as point-to-multipoint system.
GPON consists from three key components: OLT (Optical Line Terminal), ONU (Optical Network Unit), and a passive splitter.
GPON Components:
- Optical Line Terminal (OLT): The OLT is the network's brain, located at the service provider's end. It manages traffic and controls data transmission.
- Optical Network Unit (ONU): Installed at the customer's premises, the ONU connects to the optical fiber and provides internet access to your devices.
- Optical Distribution Network (ODN): This network includes optical splitters and fibers distributing data from the OLT to multiple ONUs.
- ONT (Optical Network Terminal): Sometimes called the customer premise equipment (CPE), the ONT is the physical device at your location that connects to the ONU and delivers high-speed internet.
GPON is widely deployed in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.
